Don Rico Blanco: A Sip with a Side of Surprise

You ever take a sip of something and immediately do a double take? That was me with Don Rico Blanco. Not because it was bad, far from it, but because my tequila radar immediately picked up a slight funk. And I mean slight. Just enough to make me pause and go, “Wait, was that… cheese?”

Now, before you start picturing a block of blue cheese floating in your glass, let me be clear, this isn’t a funky, overpowering tequila. The agave is front and center, fresh and clean, but lurking in the background is this unexpected whisper of something savory. Maybe a touch of sharp cheddar? A hint of aged Parmesan? Whatever it is, it caught my attention right away, likely because I’m sensitive to those notes.

The sip itself? Smooth, crisp, and balanced. That cooked agave sweetness is there, rounded out by a nice citrusy brightness and just enough spice to remind you that, yes, you’re still drinking tequila. The funkiness doesn’t stick around—it just pops in to say hello and then gracefully bows out, letting the tequila do its thing.

Would I sip this regularly? Absolutely. Once I got past my initial “Did that just happen?” moment, I found myself really enjoying it. It’s unique without being weird, smooth without being boring, and different enough to keep me coming back.
